It's not easy to be a Firefighter/First Responder. There is a level of sacrifice required due to the great
demands of time and commitment. The community expects us to respond at all times of the day, regardless
of our personal lives. Members are expected to respond for all calls for service when not at work, out of
town, or otherwise reasonably unavailable. Commitment means getting out of bed for calls at 2 a.m. and still
going to work in the morning. It means leaving hot meals on the table and sometimes missing family events.

The training process required to be certified to respond to calls is lengthy and can take up to nine months.

The application process and an overview of the training is listed below:

  1. Submit Completed Application
  2. Application reviewed by the Fire Chief
  3. Background Investigation Completed
  4. Interview with Deputy Chief and hiring panel
  5. Interview with Fire Chief
  6. Conditional Offer of Employment
  7. Medical Physical - paid for by Fire Department
  8. Hired as a probationary Firefighter/First Responder
  9. Probationary Firefighters enter a 1 year probationary period.
  10. A probationary Firefighter must complete an in-house Firefighter 1 course of instruction by the end of
    their probationary period, which consists of training in such topics as:
  • Fire Ground Safety
  • Fire Behavior
  • Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus
  • Personal Protective Clothing
  • Ladder Operations
  • Hose Advancement
  • Ropes and Knots
  • Search and Rescue
  • Power Tools and Equipment
  • Ventilation
  • Incident Command System and Personnel Accountability
  1. All firefighters must complete a Medical First Responder Course within their first year on the
    Department.
